Re: Jansen Liberator - New (old) Amp Day

Most amps, including Jansen rate amps into 4 ohms, so 153 watts into 8 ohms is healthy. My Crusader 220 Magnum, for example, is rated at 82 watts at 16 ohms, 145 watts into 8 ohms, and 220 watts with 4 ohms (read off the back panel). The transformer on my Liberator is switchable only for 8 and 16 o...

I see a few on trademe, but they are in Auckland so I haven't tried one myself.

Re: Jansen Liberator - New (old) Amp Day

Since my last post many moons ago the Liberator has been treated to new tolex, re-chromed corners, new black handles, a better vent for the top and a repositioned back cover to allow more cool air in at the bottom. I've also replaced the rubber feet with large squares of self-adhesive Nolothane to h...

Re: New Amp Day.

Only just seen this - I use an Fdeck HPF-3 with my upright and I think it does the job nicely, even with an amp/cab as venerable as my '68 Bassman 75 and similar vintage Jansen 2x12 (which does now have Eminence beta-ii drivers).

Re: What's your rig?

Picked up a nineties Trace Elliott V4 all tube 200 watt head off TradeMe. These amps are one of the holy grails of tube heads for those in the know. Beaten up but works great and good value for a grand I reckon. Four KT88s and handwired - lovely, smooth and creamy tone. Has its own character which ...

Re: BASS / AMP PICTURE THREAD :: Get your cameras ready!

My previous rig back in the 90's was a Jansen 440 crusader with JBL K140 in a EV Cab. Indestructible that was. Great rig. A 2nd EV cab and that's quite some air you can shift :) The old philips in the Bassman 25 has been repaired (badly?) by Axent at some stage. I'm considering getting a replacemen...

Re: Jansen Liberator - New (old) Amp Day

My very first Amp and Cab were both Jansen, wish I had taken more interest in it and maybe a photo at least. But it had issues with the transformer thingy and was poos. Transformer problems can be expensive to fix if they need a rewind. I recently got a matching jansen 2x12 for my bassman 75. I'm q...

Re: Jansen Liberator - New (old) Amp Day

Cool ,great to see what I call "Iconic NZ gear" still cranking out the thump ! You've done well at getting the 'Herniator' back into action and competing with the band, full credit to you. 8) Thanks :) I think the Jansen and Holden gear is classic NZ kit, probably overlooked until fairly recently. L...

Re: Jansen Liberator - New (old) Amp Day

I've been using the Liberator regularly for gigging and it stands up pretty well against two noisy guitarists (AC30 and a Reissue blackface Twin) and loud drummer. By the end of a 4 hour gig there is a tinge of overdrive occuring; quite pleasant but I might take it for a quick check up to see if bia...

Re: Are low impedance cabinets inferior?

...(a) cabinet with a 99db efficiency is going to be louder than a... cabinet of 93db efficiency... ...you will probably get more volume and more "grunt" by using 2 8ohm cabinets because you would be pushing twice as much air physically, plus acoustic coupling will likely give better bass response ...

Re: 175w / 300w continuous?

it would be nice to have the power of 2 cabs, but would have to fit them in the car...etc... One reasons I've stayed using TL-606 cabs is that I can easily fit two of them into a car, even my current 'hack' - a 1995 Toyota Starlet. 2 efficient 1x15" cabs suit me nicely, but they would not suit ever...

Re: 4x10 vs 1x15 vs something else

I have a Livesound cab which has Beta12s in it, but I often use my bandmates cab (I think it's a Bassman 2x12) which also has Betas. Sounds great. This is good to know - I've been looking into a pair of Beta12-AII's which are available in NZ for a reasonable price. However, talking about this is th...

Re: 4x10 vs 1x15 vs something else

Put a fifteen in a correctly configured horn loaded enclosure and it can have midrange dispersion wider than a 1x10 direct radiator. Put two twelves side by side and you have the laser beam highs that guitar'd players haven't been able to find the reason for, despite the fact that acoustical engine...

Mmm! A nice selection there. I'd have trouble choosing which one to play if I had more than one Ric ;)

Re: 4x10 vs 1x15 vs something else

12" drivers can certainly handle a lot of power these days along with larger fore-and-aft movement to shift some air... great for bass :-) Although not in the same ballpark as a GB 2x12 or similar, I am soon going to load some new Eminence drivers into my old Jansen 2x12 Bassman cab. Hopefully I can...
