Re: Saga bass kit build

Ok, the action issue *may* be sorted. I checked into shimming online, and it seems it's more needed for the opposite problem of mine - ie for people who have lowered their bridge to the minimum, and still have too high an action. - I had my bridge saddles maxed out, and the action was quite high, bu...

Re: Saga bass kit build

Fenderfan, the neck feels great to me (but I'm no expert on Fender style necks). It's fairly deep front to back, but I have the feeling it's not as big as some. Definitely doesn't flatten as much at the back as my main bass (Ibanez soundgear). My Ibanez is a 5 string, so of course the fretboard on t...

Re: Saga bass kit build

The tuners were absolute childs play to fit.
Just had to poke them through the hole, and put in the four screws.

Re: Saga bass kit build

Thanks Antz. Here it is all strung up: http://i165.photobucket.com/albums/u73/alexp36/Bass7.jpg http://i165.photobucket.com/albums/u73/alexp36/Bass8.jpg Will try to get a sound sample, although I can't imagine whatever crap recording I manage to do proving much about its sound. It sounds fine to me....

Re: Saga bass kit build

Next, bolting on the neck: http://i165.photobucket.com/albums/u73/alexp36/Neck1.jpg Hole in the body didn't seem to line up with the neck plate too well: http://i165.photobucket.com/albums/u73/alexp36/Neck2.jpg So I just lined it up as even as I could, and put all 4 screws in bit by bit: http://i165...

Re: Saga bass kit build

Gave it 4 coats of clear, over two nights, then left it to dry for two days. I have no real idea what I'm doing here, but I thought I'd just get some fine sandpaper and smooth it off, and then maybe spray some more clear if needed. In the end, I just sanded it with 800, and then 1500 grit sandpaper,...

Re: Saga bass kit build

Okay, I'm back - I just popped out to the shops. After a break of a few months (ok - five months, ya pedants), I've managed to find some time to make some more progress on this. Gave up on the headstock logo (for now), and decided to just clear coat the neck, and get the bass bolted together. First ...

Re: Saga bass kit build

Thanks for that info Marty - particularly about the bridges. Interesting isn't it how any number of "experts" on various forums will swear black and blue that their particular bridge made a huge difference to the sound of their instrument. I've always wondered a bit about this "high-mass" thing for ...

Re: Saga bass kit build

Any more progress? I want to see some pics!!!! This thread has inspired me to start sanding back a bass body I bought off trade me about 3 months ago. :D Speaking of inspiration, looking at the guitar parts section on ebay, and doing a keyword search of "bass" brings up a ton of neat stuff (not sur...

Re: Saga bass kit build

The screws for the bridge from Marty arrived on Thursday, and he's right - they are about twice as long. No surprise there I guess, they do have to hold a lot of tension. Thanks again to Marty - he sent them to me for no charge, and wouldn't even take any money for postage! That's pretty cool, to sa...

Re: Saga bass kit build

A sound clip is a good idea, must admit. Can't guarantee I'll get around to it immediately once it's finished, but ya never know. I'm definitely curious to know how good/bad, or possibly average, it sounds. One thing I can say already is that the hardware definitely seems to be of a quality that mat...
