Mesa Strategy Eight:88

20151201_130245_small.jpg PIcked up the Strategy 8:88 just before Xmas. Awesome tone and drives my Mesa Powerhouse cabs so well. I've owned SWR and Ampeg heads and I still have my Mesa M-Pulse 600 which is a mighty powerful amp but the Strategy just has a tone that none of the others had. I'm proba...

Compressor choice

I'm looking for a compressor suitable for bass and kickdrum. Anyone experience with the DBX166? Anyone using it? There appears to be a 166xs and 166xl? Not sure yet on what the differences are. Any help appreciated. Chris

Re: Why did the Ampeg cross over the road?

I have a Mesa m-Pulse 600w head and Powerhouse cabs. I have the 4x10, 2x12 and 1x15 cabintes. I can use any two in combination to get the maximum power. Each cabinet has 3 way selectable crossover points and an attenuator for the horn. It's simple to hook up, its loud and the sounds is better than m...

Re: Buying Basses in NZ

Manofthematch, I didn't come across that. What I would say is that the payment process through there web site (using Paypal) was probably not as great as it could have been. They also discounted the bass down from the already discounted price. In the end it all worked perfectly.

Re: Buying Basses in NZ

BassCentral - good to deal with. My contact person there was 'Perry' I ordered my Fender American Jazz Deluxe 5 in Olympic White, rosewood fingerboard...great. Arrived in NZ within 5 days of ordering (that was 2 weeks ago today), paid the FEDEX people what Customs required (15%) and picked it up fro...

Re: What is the most challenging piece you've had to learn

Master Blaster by Stevie Wonder. I am not as skilled as some here and certainly not the fastest player by any means, but I found this song to be a real challenge and really enjoyed learning it. It also gave me a huge boost of renewed enthusiasm which was really lacking at that point of my career. Mu...

What is the most challenging piece you've had to learn

Hi fellow Bassplayers, Driving home yesterday listening to some original music I started thinking about some of the more challenging musical pieces I've learned over the years. I'm keen to hear what other people have found challenging and why. I think it should provide interesting reading for all. I...

Re: Psycho-acoustic enhancement for Bass

Thanks for your recommendation timi. You wouldn't be the first person to suggest the DBX160 to me :). I'm going to investigate that. I had the Aphex device way before the compressor and I find if it is used carefully (not to extremes) then it really lifts the overall sound. Here at work this morning...

Re: Psycho-acoustic enhancement for Bass

Thanks for the reply timi, I have experience with the Aphex devices but the BBE device is an unknown to me. I'll research more to find out about if it is similar to the Aphex device or something else entirely. What compressor would you recommend? I used to run the Alesis inline between the BOSS GT6B...

Psycho-acoustic enhancement for Bass

Anyone using any form of psycho-acoustic enhancement on their bass? I used an Aphex Type C many years ago. Then about 4 years ago I brought an Aphex Bass Xciter with Big Bottom foot pedal and a 'Punch Factory' optical compressor (I got a really good deal buying new units off eBay :). Any way the Bas...

Mark King - Level 42

I always liked the style of Mark King of Level 42 he gets such a great sound. On the other hand Chris Squire (just been watching a YES dvd) or Geddy Lee of Rush.

Hi fellow bassplayers - an introduction

My name is Chris and I'm in Upper Hutt, Wellington. I'm 53 and started learning to play bass guitar when I was at Hutt Valley High School many year ago. I've played in various covers and hard rock original bands over the years since the mid 1980's. I've just started 'getting back into it' over the l...
