My New 5 String

Post by mickeyj4j » Fri Aug 28, 2015 6:29 pm

Upgraded my bass guitar. A new Aria IGB355 integra 5 string. In nice antique violin colour.

Here are the specs
  1. Nice carved alder body
  2. Bolt-on maple neck
  3. Rosewood fingerboard
  4. 34" scale length
  5. 24 frets
  6. Two BD-4 double-coil Humbucker pickups
  7. Controls: One volume knob, one balance knob, one active treble knob, and one active bass knob
  8. Matte Silver hardware.
I had been considering the upgrade for a while. Just happened to be walking past the music shop and pop in. Picked up the bass, it felt good to play, great tone, and yesterday went to get it.

**Note** see my post Action Off Or Not Thing is that this bass feels great to play. After I got it home I looked at the action more closely. The string action is way low. I thought new instruments would have been set up with a reasonable action before selling.
  1. I added a capo at fret one
  2. put my finger on fret 12
  3. tested frets 4-8 hardly any if at all gap.
  4. then moved up to fret 16 and tested again a small gap
  5. went to fret 24 tested again a bit more gap.
Do you think this bass needs the action setup?
I have done my 4 string and acoustic guitar before. I usually leave a credit card gap but i should get a proper feeler gauge. Is a 5 string bass anything special to set up?

**Note**Please see my related post with my review after several weeks using this bass. My 5 String Aria

PS: To keep my old passive 4 string or sell it to recuperate some cost back. I only need one bass to use. mmmmmmmmm decisions.

Hi the origional set where round wound. I recently strung it with Elixir Nanoweb light 45 / 65 / 85 / 105 / 130 The 130 only just fit. Won t be changing them for a while.
I use elixir strings on my acoustic guitar so thought i would try on bass. I like the feel of tne bass set. Only had them on for about a month though. I don't know if elixir make flat wound.

I did test flats on my 4 string (they may have been XL). Flats have a nice mellow rich tone as apposed to rounds which are more bright and punchy.
but the latest set I have are XL Nickel Wound EXL165 45 / 65 / 85 / 105. Flat wound

Why do you ask about flats

Not many players use flats on an active V
I do, so It piqued my interest.
