I sing lead, also BV with harmonies, both on bass guitar and upright bass. The upright also requires that I play in tune, being a fretless instrument. My tip is to learn the vocal so well you don't have to think about it. In fact reading while playing is a no-no for me. If I don't know the words I don't do the song. There's a saying that is so appropriate here.... An amateur learns a part until he/she can play it well, but a professional learns a part until he/she can't play it wrong.
