Go the 7

Post by foal30 » Wed Feb 14, 2007 9:13 pm

for players with suspect or at least less than satisfactory ears I recomend
Going the 7 to help remedy or at least improve this problem.
My ability to "hear" different chords/identify notes has come on in leaps and bounds once I included this in a regular practice regime.
I sure wish I had started these sort of exercises years ago, instead of "yeah I can play that ,Next!" sort of attitude.

so the basic form is;

Bbmaj7 arpeggio (try and walk it, jazz style)

Bb D F A
D F A Bb
F A Bb D
A Bb D F

this "spells out" the 4 notes nicely.
move up chromatic or in 3rds from here
try descending them too.

Part 2 is min7
same thing , different spelling and the b7 really sings out

Bb Db F Ab
Db F Ab Bb
F Ab Bb Db
Ab Bb Db F

I guess it's learning exercises properly, as above I should have been more onto this sort of thing years ago.Try writing the notes on the stave and reading as you play too, double your pleasure.

Hopefully this helps somebody.

a lot of James Brown lines are useful here.
mainly 7 chords (dominant).

just an idea to apply in a musical setting...
