Slap bass and volume

Post by ZK-TUI » Wed Jan 26, 2011 7:25 pm

Okay, one thing I noticed when I play slap bass is a loss of volume - it's on a MM sub so I attribute this to the fact I'm hitting the bass over the end of the neck, a far way away from the pickup (over which I play when I'm fingering). When I was playing in a band situation I did a quick slap riff in a jam but the bass disappeared!

Got a Big Muff Pi for my birthday and was potentially goingto get another, lower cost pedal as well, I was looking at the EHX LPB-1 for use as a booster to help with slapping (and also as an experimental distortion pedal...)

Any ideas?

I get the opposite, I slap/pop just behind the neck pup on my Jazz, and it gets much louder. I have a soft fingerstyle technique :?

Still sounds terrible either way due to my abysmal slap practicing

I think a half decent compressor would be a good idea in your situation. The built compressors on the amps that have them are generally not very tweakable (see the thread linked to above). I don't slap much, well not in the way you mean (I play an EUB), but I do find my Seymour Duncan Doubleback compressor quite handy on slab. The "doubleback" feature is essentially a clean blend knob, and there's a 3-way eq switch which allows you to blend back only part of the signal.

Check this site out for everything you could ever possibly want to know about compression and individual compressors: http://www.ovnilab.com/

Or you could always just not slap ... :D
