Counter melodies

Post by greghr » Sun Aug 21, 2016 6:59 pm

Can anyone illuminate for me the principles involved in playing 'counter melodies' and how you might go about doing that without driving the singers in your band crazy and giving you the evil eye because you have strayed away from the root notes. Apparently Paul McCartney was a master at this.

I'd suggest every musician has an allowance on what they consider acceptable dissonance.

Start with thirds and sevenths!

If the feel is good often you can get away with more

Thanks for the suggestion Foal. I also like the sixth going to the third. But sometimes the sixth raises eyebrows!
