Why the intricate stuff with the Left hand?

Post by ryla » Fri May 29, 2009 9:58 pm

Why is all the intricate cerebral stuff for bass players (ok, guitarplayers as well) performed with the left hand? - assuming were all right handed - piano players seem to be correct in playing melody with right hand and rhythm with left (im assuming we are not leftys) - should we teach our kids to start playing left-handed instrument for more appropriate technique?

Yeah it is odd eh .
I have wondered about this my self .
But even when people who are right handed ,who have never played , just about always play air guitar the same way as us right handeds  .
BrendonM plays right handed even though he is left handed...Where is he when you need him

Don't forget the right hand does all the timing/rhythm. Thats fairly important. I dont think it would really matter which way you learned in the end.

I would not suggest teaching kids "lefthanded", simply because there are less instruments available for them. Stick with what we have always done.

I'm left handed but play right handed.

I always thought it was easier this way. Plus instrument selection is better.

hmm... for intricate stuff I think foals 'orientation' would have a very slight advantage

Its a different instrument but when Im scratching on the turntable/mixer I prefer my right hand on the record and my left on the crossfader - although, pretty much every other right handed DJ prefers the opposite!
Im guessing its something to do with playing bass the same way - rhythm in the right hand, technical stuff with the left 8)
