My Favourite Bass Players
Re: My Favourite Bass Players
John Deacon (Queen)
The amazing and crazy Verdine White (Earth, Wind & Fire, who are still going strong. I have a DVD of them in a combined concert with Chicago, who are also still going strong, recorded just a couple of years ago)
The late Dee Murray (Original Elton John Band) Dee is a very much under rated bass player in my opinion. Have a listen to the Yellow Brick Road album, and in particular "The Ballard Of Danny Bailey" for some oh so sweet bass sounds and wonderful playing that not only complements this particular tune, but actually makes the whole song work brilliantly.
An awesome player.
Cheers
John

or "I guess that's why they call it the blues"
for some prime L2 STEINBERGER action.
my favorite is probably "Benny and the Jets" from the album you mention
it's just such a solid line.

Re: My Favourite Bass Players
rolling eyes at STEINBERGER facts.
I'll use anything to bolster my arguments Steve.
it was quite an interesting story on Talk Bass, but there is no doubt such topics bring out the worst of instrument nerdness.

Re: My Favourite Bass Players
Just found out about a house/disco bass player in New York called Gene Perez who is the equivalent of the UK's Julian Crampton. Another awesomely funky player who just nails the groove.

Re: My Favourite Bass Players
I own the Steinberger L2 heard on that song. Dee was my inspiration to take up bass in 1976. I'm very happy/proud to own one of his basses.or "I guess that's why they call it the blues"
for some prime L2 STEINBERGER action.

Proud owner of Dee Murray's Steinberger!

Re: My Favourite Bass Players
Everyone has their own individual tastes of course... but has no one else mentioned Willie Weeks?
Weeks' playing on Donny Hathaway's Live (recorded in or about 1972 and is made up of songs from a couple of live recording from different clubs), including the bass solo on "Voices Inside (Everything Is Everything)", is beyond description (at least from me).
IMHO this album should be required listening for any drummer and bass player.
Weeks' groove with Freddie White on drums is sensational.
Other favorite bass players are (in no particular order and not limited too):
Jamerson - of course
Tony Garnier - Bob Dylan's bass player and who has played more shows with the man then anyone else - ever
Calvin "Fuzz" Jones - Chicago blues man, who has played with just about everyone in the scene
Wille Kent - Another Chicago blues man, played bass, sings and fronted his own band - died a few years ago but was in the pocket, period.
Johnny B. Gayden - works with Albert Collins amongst others
Tommy Shannon - SRV and Double Trouble bassist, nuff said

Re: My Favourite Bass Players
I hope no one was a scoffing about that Elton John story!
nice to see you on board Texas, although it's slightly distressing for me to see an L2 with a lower number than mine.
Willie Weeks? I think I only mention him in every third post. cop Bowie's "Young Americans" too or the Rolling Stones "It's only Rock and Roll".
that "Everything is Everything" is tops, I've ripped it off unashamedly, starting on the b5 for the Em descending riff is all class.

This thread has moved into #2 position behind "In Love" but above "Interesting Herald Article" in my summation of this mighty fine site.
#749 for me Texas. One day I'll get a fretless L2. One day...
