Agreed! Agreed! Agreed! With all due respect, the Wootens etc are pretenders to the throne. Listen to the improvised section in Continuum.... bebop solos worthy of John Coltrane and Charlie Parker, melodicism worthy of Miles Davis, harmonics worthy of..... well.... JACO! Fretless bass was just a tool for Jaco, the music came from within.... he could have played tenor sax or Mongolian nose flute, it still would have been Jaco.

I gotta say, a lot of young cats today spout this player or that player is better/faster/whatever, but if you really listen to Jaco's tunes, really get inside them, there is no bassist on this planet that holds a candle to him. I've listened to all the hotshot bass guitarists and all the hotshot upright players for 25 years, and there's not one who has his combined skills that greghr listed. Poor Joni must cringe when she has to play Coyote with another bassplayer.
