Mini rig of doom!

Post by martyforrer » Fri May 29, 2015 2:13 pm

While I love the sound of my Phil Jones Bass combo and powered extension, it was not quite grunty enough for some gigs, as I found out when playing at the Wine Cellar in Auckland (a loud venue). I tried a GK MB800 head with my PJB 6x5 cab at a gig last night...... oh man! Serious grunt. I had to bring the master down so I could crack the gain on, and the huge headroom gave the old upright bass tone to Africa. I also had to wind the bass knob right back to about 9 o'clock. I think I might keep this sucker! While GK rates it at 8oo watts into 4 ohms, an American gear magazine bench tested it at 1000 watts.... I tried it out volume-wise at work where there's no-one to disturb, and had stuff falling off the walls! A friend who works 200 metres away said he heard me clear as a bell. Bwahahahahahahahahahaha...........

I've got one of those MB800's or the older MB500 on my wish list Marty. Are you gonna get one?

Awesome heads, maybe not quite the thickness of an 800RB but still that GK sound and so small and light.

I have the MB500 and even with a small cab it's loud, couldn't imagine needing the extra power of the MB800.

You've had yours a fair while now timi... has it been reliable?

I got the MB800 only because the MB500 is out of stock, none available in NZ, and as it was the MB800 was the last one in the country. I would love to try a Greenboy Fearless 112 cab with it .......

The MB Fusion is a great option too, if you want to add a bit of "tubey" goodness.

Tubes never seem to be that good for my upright. I've had all tube heads and tubes in the preamp, but they're always too warm for the upright bass.

I discovered my PJB 6x5 which I thought was 600watts at 6 ohms is actually only 300watts, so I'm now a bit wary of cranking the GK MB800, which will put double that power into that load! To this end I am going for a new cab to suit. I have long lusted after a Greenboy fEARful 12/6, so I am going to build one using Greenboys cab plans and high quality drivers and crossover componentry. I have looked at the BFM cabs too, but have narrowed it down to this particular cab. Yeehaa!

That should be very interesting, Marty. I will be keen to hear that. I have been looking into bringing in one of the Barefaced cabs from England which are similarly boutique and an easy import. Their site even specifically deals with export costs to NZ. Have you had a look at it?

Hi Tim,
Those are good looking cabs with good specs, but with GST and MPI etc charges, a Big Baby II will cost about $1900 landed. I can build a fEARful equivalent with all the proper drivers and crossover for around $900-1000. The only difference will be I cant find the specified Baltic Birch ply, so will have to find a high quality substitute.... maybe a marine ply.

I made a start. Ordered my Eminence Kappalite drivers and a Greenboy heavy duty 800hz crossover, will start on the woodwork this weekend. Ooooh.... this is exciting!

Cabinet is finished and I'm in the process of applying a Duratex finish.
