Bill Fitzmaurice Cabinets

Post by ryanmaiden » Tue May 27, 2008 10:24 pm

I've been thinking about doing a DIY speaker cab (as many of us do at some stage) and stumbled upon Bill Fitzmaurice Loudspeakers. He sells detailed plans and instructions on his website and I've found some pretty rave reviews, anybody here know anyhing about them? The omni 12 and omni 15 cabinets seem to be the choice for bass players.

Here's a link to his site: http://www.billfitzmaurice.com

He also has designs for PA and Home Theatre speakers and subs. He claims his designs need only half the power of leading brands to produce the same volume.

A friend of mine is a registered builder for Bill Fitzmaurice cabs (I think he's the only registered builder in NZ). I can tell you that having tried the Omni 10 out, well, it's pretty amazing! It is LOUD - equal in volume to my Warwick 411 pro cab, and the mids jump out at you - you will have NO trouble being heard above the rest of the band - lol! The big plus for me, is the weight - I have always had to have help lugging my cab around (being only 5"2" and not exactly "butch"), but I can actually lift the Omni 10 in and out of the car myself, it is amazingly light. I just have to start saving now, and be extra nice to the man of the house!

If anyone wants to find out more and see some of the Bill Fitzmaurice cabs, you can PM me and I will pass on my friends details. He lives in Auckland. Also if you decide to have a go at building one yourself, he could help you out with advice etc.
Ok, I'll do the stupid thing first, then all you shy people follow...

Hi, I've been considering the thing for quite a while, and the Omnis 10 look really appealing in terms of clear tone / portability.
So yeah, I just bought the plans, they are extremely well made, although not in Metric standards  , but clear enough for a newbie.

The only problem for us here down under is to source the correct drivers at a reasonable price. For instance, the Eminence Beta 10 are cheap as chips in the US or in Europe, but they'll cost an arm here, and hard to find. That's basically where I'm stuck... But it'll happen at some point.

I'm thinking about getting my bits from speakerhardware.com, they sell kits of parts for all the bill fitzmaurice designs, I'm pretty sure they ship internationally. All you need is the wood and whatever you are going to cover it with, everything else is in the kit, although they probably can't send the glue due to customs here.

I think Live Sound is the only place I have found here that can do the whole range of eminence speakers, their pricing doesn't seem too bad either.

Thanks for pointing me to speakerhardware.com, that sounds like a good foolproof solution then!

We'll compare our results in Chch!

We've just come through the other side of a BFM building fashion on my forum. Some people have liked his cabs, others haven't and sold them on quite easily. Two people who were registered builders have chucked it in for one reason or another.

If this thread remotely registers on Google, I think you can be pretty confident that Bill will drop by to offer advice and promote the cabs.

That would be cool.... words from the man himself.
Cabinets are easy to onsell so the risk is rather minimal.
