Post by shaymax » Thu Jul 21, 2011 8:45 pm

Hi everyone, my name is shay and ive owned my bass for about 8 years. i havent progressed much which is frustrating but now that we have finally got broad band hopefully i can use it to improve my bass playing and knowledge. My bass and amp is one of those ashton deals that i paid $800 for. Its been good for learning to play and ive even used it in a shed band which only lasted for about a year ha ha. any way ill be using this site as much as possible, happy bass playing

Shay, welcome. There is one, and really only one solution to having a bass for 8 years and being frustrated with progress.......... get a teacher. Not a mate who plays a bit of guitar, a real live professional bass teacher. They will motivate you, inspire you, challenge you, and after 6 months you will be thinking "why the hell didn't I do this earlier". You'll be rocking in no time at all!
If you tell us where you live we'll probably come up with a list of recommended teachers for ya!

Welcome along

Martin has a good point. Also playing with others is a good way to get the motivation to play better.

good idea about getting a teacher, i live in New Plymouth so if ya know any good teachers please let me know. I am trying to teach myself but its hard to know what to learn next. I would love to be able to do a bit more than just root note playing when jamming with mates ha ha

Root note playing is a good start, but after 8 years you should be making things a bit more interesting.
Go see Dom or Jo at Musicworks in NP, tell them Marty at HBA sent you, and that you're looking for a bass teacher. They'll put you on the right track. Good luck.
Dont be afraid to ask questions here, there are some pretty knowledgeable players here, and remember, the only dumb question is the one that goes unasked.
