I have figured out a good way to keep my strings fresh. I have two sets for each of my bass guitars. I have one set on my bass and the other set soaking safely in a small sealed container of methylated spirits. Each week i rotate which set is on the bass, and the other is in the container soaking until the following week. I find i can keep repeating this process for up to a year, until i feel that the strings need to be replaced. I also use GHS Fast Fret, to help keep the strings clean.
