I generally prefer new strings, but I'm not so fussy as to actually always have new strings on my bass.

I have 2-3 year old Elixirs on my Quattra at the moment. The A/E strings are fluffed up and getting dull, but the G is still super zingy and bright... too bright considering the sound of the A/E. The D is about perfect.

I overhauled a Jazz bass yesterday that just sounded so perfect with new strings. I can't imagine that bass sounding so fantastic with old dead strings.

What I mostly like is rounds that are about a week old. Brand new is just a to bit zingy for me
Amen to that!

I'm using groundwounds at the moment, just for the record.

I am yet to try ground wounds. What brand are you using?

D'Addario. Might not be the "best", but it's a good and dependable brand.
