String recommendation

Post by music_is_my_life » Sun Dec 09, 2012 5:49 pm

I just got my new custom built bass back (based off a p-bass with a lace aluma p pickup). At the moment has dean markley 45-105's but i foresee them breaking like they did on my bass (lost my e and g string). So, im wondering what would you recommend for it? They need to last a while, preferably have thread around the end of the string, and probably more of a darker tone than average because i hear that aluma p pickups can be quite bright. only thing ive seen like this are fender medium guage. Oh, also im tuned in drop C# h
Only rule is no d'addario's :P

DR Sunbeams are nice. I have recently imported most of my strings (better selection) - I use La Bella Quarter Rounds on my P bass, and they might be what you're after tonally.

You're breaking strings? In 35+ years of playing I've never broken a string. Might I suggest a review of your technique may be in order?

45-105s for drop C#? Have you considered trying a set that's 110 or 115 for the low string? I play in Eb with 45-105s (ie your tuning without dropping the low) and it's still ok, but if I was dropping the Eb I'd want a thicker string...

Whoops, didn't read that part. I use DR DDT strings for my low-tuning band.

Yea i broke the g string then e. Keep in mind, they were dean markleys tuned to drop C# however they seemed pretty week, ball ends were scratched like you wouldn't believe, never seen that on them before. So I don't think ill be buying dean markleys again. Also didn't like the tone terribly much
