Help from Zero!

Post by DubnBass » Sat Jan 26, 2013 6:54 pm

That Squier Jazz Deluxe I bought off you a while back had the "slap switch" changed to a passive/active switch...
I bought another off TradeMe recently for a local high school and seeing as schools and instruments don't often get along I am wanting to change it's "slap switch" to a passive/active switch also. You wouldn't be able to talk me through it/send me a wiring schematic would you? There are a lot of wires in that control cavity! :?

Hey there.

Short answer: take it to a luthier

Long answer: I have no idea, take it to a luthier

Sorry! I got all my work done by Ashcustomworks in Auckland, and haven't got the foggiest about the wiring. I definitely suggest a luthier because I am pretty sure that the preamp can be damaged doing it the wrong way. I'm sure someone here will know of a good person in Chch.

Or maybe an amp tech?
It shouldn't be to hard to bi-pass the pre amp. When it is in passive mode do you have use of the knobs?

Thanks for all of your responses... I think I might give a go at opening up both of the cavities, lying the basses side-by-side and comparing them to each other & play a bit of 'spot the difference'!
In passive mode the only dials you have control of are the volume and pickup blend, not the bass, mid or treble.

It sounds like the signal chain is probably; pick ups>blend>volume>preamp(tone)>jack? blend and volume could be the other way around

I am not sure what the switch does. mid scoop? I assume it has wires from the preamp? I guess you decide if you want it on or off then solder those wires together. Or you could add another switch for the passive/active and have both options

Then you could take the wire what you have left like this pic. Effects circuit board is your preamp. the in is the wire from either volume pot or blend out is to the jack.

If you could take some close pics we should be able to work it out

I was a bit tired when I wrote that. The volume and blend could be anywhere in the circuit. But what matters is that they are not part of the preamp, so that is a plus
