Seriously, how many picks do you need for a gig???

Post by joppo » Sat Jun 20, 2009 10:44 am

In the music section of our Saturday paper there is a recent picture of Gene Simmons playing in full KISS makeup, costume and trademark tongue flapping in the breeze. A quick look at the photo, and I was amazed at the number of picks stuck at handy locations for quick and ready access, should you drop a pick (obviously it is difficult to get a pick off the floor if you are dressed in armour and platform soled shoes  ). He has 8 on the headstock and another 7 on the upper horn, plus you can see another 7 on his mic stand that you can see. So how many is too many?

yeah that probably is a little extreme. But everything about that man is over the top. Better to be over prepeared than under I guess.

maybe when playing live he gets sweaty and plays a bit like a monkey?

would look pretty un-inspiring during a full-on pyrotechnics show to look like a manus trying to grab another pick from a non-handy location.

i usually just have a spare in my back pocket if things go awry...even then i'll usually finish the song fingerstyle before grabbing it.
i like rickenbackers. and fridges.

Yeah,.
And I guess he could grab one quickly without the need to have very good hand eye coordination

I doubt any of Gene's outfits ever had a back pocket!

Like most of this kind of act I suspect he throws a lot into the crowd and they become collectors items .

I saw Ronnie and Keith doing this in the movie Shine a light about a Stones concert several times during a song they would flick the pick into the crowd and use a new one they would all be custom printed
