Foal's Boner

Post by foal30 » Wed Jun 27, 2012 7:56 pm

you have all seen the Growler, next up is the Boner

this is a 1989 Fender Longhorn "Banana " or "Boner" Jazz Bass. The top horn extend to the 12th fret and the fingerboard has 21 frets which was a new thing for Fender. Some later models had the TBX electronics and the Precision version also has 1x bridge position Jazz pick up. Mine is just the normal vol-vol-tone.

someone de-fretted it and for the $ I felt this was a cheap fretless. When I received the Bass I was concerned I was going mad (madder??) becasue the body style, pickguard didn't marry with what i knew of Fender Jazz.

whilst heavy this is the only Fender I have owned or played that has very good to excellent balance. by this I mean lack of neck dive. The tuners are a bit 'slippy' IMO but generally it holds it's tuning OK. Neck specs are bog standard, and the defret job is pretty tidy. I've had the action lowered considerably due to my ongoing poor health and whilst this speeds the movement  I'm still getting used to having any form of clank or rattle in my sound dude.

strung with flats this Bass records real nice especially through my much beloved Jansen BassMan. Not gigged a lot with it, when I have I'm normally a bit precious about playing fretless live so then to only listen to myself than properly the band. Does go good with both Boss Limiter and Sadowsky Pre-Amp

if you see a Boner you could do worse than grabbing it with both hands.
foal says 7.5 / 10. no hi-fi thing but can be a mellow workhorse if set up right.

too kind. I'd of possibly given the Boner Bass another point if I hadn't of had a lash on CK's Pedulla. Like Evangelical sermons and intestinal parasites, sometimes it's best not to know.
