Best results I have got to date is with a Shure SM7B. Sounds fat as! also nice results with a KSM44A or Beta52. I usually just use the di out on my pre amp though to be honest. But not all Di outs are created equal.

with my old Ibanez Bass and all the buzzing / noise problems I was having, we were just using an old vocal mic to mic up my cab - and to be honest it didn't sound too bad.
Now I have a new bass (Squire modified vintage jazz) I don't have any buzzing problems and use the DI on my amp and it works fine :D
