Audacity is the free PC sound recording and editing software Randomplay came up with for the 'Bass Solo Experiment' topic. http://www.bassplayer.co.nz/phpbb2/view ... ?f=48&t=63

It's free, easy and works really well.... and can export to MP3.
I use it mostly to record whole sessions and then to chop it up into separate MP3's.
Randomplay wrote:Audacity is a simple to use recorder that is free ware and an mp3 wav converter... dunno if its the best one. I used it a bit before i got cubase and it was alright.
I will just edit in here that you need to download a plugin for the mp3 export... its on same page. I didnt check i just opened up the one i already got and that could export mp3, id obviously downloaded the pluggin already.

NOTE: DOWNLOAD AND USE AT YOUR OWN RISK

AUDACITY LINK: http://audacity.sourceforge.net/
LAME MP3 ENCODER LINK: http://www.bassplayer.co.nz/files/lame-3.96.1_mp3.zip
The 'LAME' plugin is needed for mp3 export. To install plugin just run audacity, choose export as mp3, then it will ask you for the location of the LAME plugin.

I'm pretty sure Audition is a pay-for product.
It was a freeware project taken over by Adobe and turned into a commercial app i think.

Anyway Audacity is definetly a good choice.

There's another free one called Reaper.

Also, Audition used to be Cool Edit Pro, which to the best of my knowledge was never freeware.
Hopefully Adobe have fixed all the sync problems it used to have....

yes reaper is a good one....

sony ACID xpress also.....

and i thought that Audition was based on Cool Edit developed into the freeware scene and taken over by Adobe? I'm probably wrong anyway.....

Yeah good point, maybe old versions of Cool Edit did become free once Adobe took over.

Example: Record a drum track, then record a bass track. Listen back and by the end of the song the bass would sometimes be WAY out of time with the drums, several seconds sometimes. It didn't do this all the time, but still kinda often (although Windows ME might have been the problem). I only used the program for 18 months or so before changing to Pro Tools and I was glad to be rid of it (and the PC).

sometimes it just crashes

I think it's Microsoft :)
although I'm probably the last person to offer a computer opinion...

I like looking at Cool Edit Pro, especially the trumpet parts, the wave shapes look cool
it's been pretty good to us but I reckon a sensible engineer is worth 100x any recording program/system.

you can use Audition past its trial period by leaving it loaded and shutting windows down in hibernate. Of course, if you have to reboot windows from scatch after the Audition trial period has lapsed, then thats it.

You used to be able to do that for Windows 2000 and XP trial editions as well. Shut them down in hibernate and they keep functioning after the trial period. Dont know about Vista though. Dodgy practice, but what the hell. I used Windows for free for a few years. hehe

Audition 1.5 is very good.
Cool Edit Pro 1.2A (before Adobe buyout) excellent
Cool Edit pro2 pants.

pants = sync issues including sound card discrepancy. Not recommended.

as above this is second hand news, I can't even upload a photo.
