Onto the most terrifying and fun bit to date - shaping the neck. This has all been done with a rasp to take it down close to where I want it, a file to smooth off and a tidy up with sandpaper. I've used a technique called faceting. I bevelled each side at 45 degrees getting close to the depth I wanted, and then filed off the two new edges I made, and then the four new smaller edges and so on (over and over until you end up with it nicely rounded).

Here is another view. Still a few rasp marks to sand out and need to blend the ends to make nice transitions, but it feels pretty good already.

:D awesome, looks like fun. What radius / profile are you shaping the neck to?

I was afraid someone was going to ask that. I modelled the neck on my Vintage Modified fretless Jazz which I reall like. The fretboard radius is 9.5 inches and it has the skinny little 39mm width at the nut. The neck is a little bit deeper than I planned. The fretboard wood is really nice so made that a bit thicker than normal. Then I realised that made the truss rod slot sit a little deeper in the neck, so couldn't take as much wood off the back of the neck as I thought. It feels like a telecastor bass neck to me.

Somewhat overdue for an update. Haven't had too much time to work on the neck over summer, but have finished shaping the neck and just down to the fine sanding. I have sealed the neck with shellac and oiled the fingerboard, so it now looks pretty much what it will be like when finished. The shellac show up any blemishes that need further sanding, so I'm just sanding, adding another layer of shellac and repeating until I'm really happy with it. Then I'll spray the neck with Nitrocellulose to finish it.

Finally made some decisions about the body, and cut the timber! This is gluing the two halves together to make the body blank.

To give an idea of perspective, here it is with the neck sitting in place. Probably a little hard to see the pencil line in this one, but hopefully enough to get the idea

Zombie thread! Finally made a decision about electronics and hardwear, so time to get back on the job and finish this bass. Here is the body template with the bridge and a chromed control plate. I am thinking of making the control plate out of wood so I can shape the top, so might change the shape of that a little bit.
