Custom 22 fret neck for Jazz Bass ???

Post by KAHA » Thu Oct 01, 2009 1:19 am

I just bought a used Sunburst (black pick guard) MIJ 75' reissue Fender Jazz Bass and am currently modifying it.

Have ordered SJB-1 pups, Audere JZ3 preamp, black Hipshot tuners, black BadAss II bridge and Schaller strap buttons and locks.

My question is does anyone know where I can buy a 22 or if I'm lucky a 24 fret maple neck to fit the 75' reissue JB??? I heard Allparts have a 22 fret neck that might fit ??? but I'm not sure

Any links or guidance would be very much appreciated :D

Cheers

im waiting for ash to chime in....
but im wondering ig there is enough space for you to adjust the position of the bridge (especially a huge bad ass) to compensate for the more frets. /..... or am i thinking it wrong

Will you be selling the old neck? Maple or Rosewood?

Now that's a good question

For that kind of delicate surgery I'll definitely be taking her to a luthier for a second opinion

By the way who's the best guitar/bass tech in Aucks?

Cheers :P

I was thinking that It might be prudent to keep the original rosewood neck & Fender USA vintage pups for the 75' JB in case I might want to sell it in the future

But I may consider selling the rosewood neck to help pay for the Allparts 22 fret maple neck 8)

Maybe I can be talked into it

I saw this gentleman with a 22 fret Allparts maple neck on his MIJ 75' reissue JB and thought hhhmmmmmmm.........I wonder if that'll work on my axe :D

Does anyone know if there are any other options :?:

Cheers 8)

Warmoth do up to 24 fret necks (http://www.warmoth.com). They're a little pricey, but you get what you pay for. Have heard nothing but good things about their necks. They ship anywhere in the world.

And you don't have to worry about your bridge position as the scale length is not altered, the fretboard just extends further towards your pickups. It overhangs the neck joint, you'll see what I mean when you check out the warmoth site.
The good that men do is often buried with their bones, but the evil that men do lives on and on.

Thanks for that mate :D

Checked out their site and found the 24 fret neck with the extension, it looks like a definite possibility, just need to work out the practical physical ergonomics/playability & sound etc.

I'll google others who may have gone for this option and see what their experience was like

Cheers!

By the way the craftsmanship, specifications and careful attention to detail has pretty much sold me on the Warmoth neck option.

I'd be a little bit surprised if you got decent tone out of the 22/23/24 frets on the thin fretboard extension hanging out over thin air. It would be much better if some of the maple went out with the rosewood, but still asking for dead frets. I suppose it beats routing the body for a full-length custom 24 fret neck if resale is a concern.

Hi Ash,

Any suggestions are appreciated.

Do you think routing the body for a full-length custom 24 fret flame maple neck is the way to go without sacrificing tone? can you do it? and what might I be looking at, cost wise?

I'm not concerned about resale value any longer.

Cheers!

Hi Adrian,

Thanks for the reply, great to hear from you.

I like your idea of adding a solid extension to the existing neck similar to a jazz archtop guitar and the quote is very, very reasonable as well :)

Once I've found a place to stay and settled in Auckland, I'll come to your store in mt eden for a chat and we can go ahead with your plan

Cheers,

David
