Sooo, before doing too much more it was time to actually make a life size plan. I tried doing it by hand, but the curves weren't very good. So downloaded a free CAD package and have drawn up the outline of the body. May still need a little fine tuning, but I'm pretty happy with this for the body. Got the neck to draft up next to get to grips with exactly where the neck pocket will do, and what the internal body chamber will look like.

A little imagination needed here, but I've put some finish on a couple of offcuts. The small block is kauri for the body, and the large piece is matai for the neck. Chasing a fretboard at the moment which will add a little bit of grey for a nice contrast.

Finally found the time (and technique) to get the fretboard radiused. Wasn't making any progress with sandpaper and a radiused sanding block. An hour with careful use of a cabinet scraper and alternating with the radiused sanding block, and bingo! The wood is puriri and is super hard. The are still a few little marks to get out, and then it is working down from the 60 grit I'm using now to some 800 grit. The radius is 9.5 inches - keeping it the same as my Jazz bass.

A few more photos, and finally it is starting to look more than pieces of timber.

Here I've band-sawed the neck to it rough shape. I've got it clamped to a straight edge so I can run the router along and get it nice and straight.
pre-router.jpg
It's a little hard to see in this picture, but the two edges are now really straight and smooth. You can see I glued in the two carbon rods which help to keep the neck straight, and sanded them down so they are flush with the neck surface.
post-router.jpg
So here are the bits laid out next to my Jazz bass so you get an idea of scale. The neck dimensions are the same as on the Jazz. But, I'm making the headstock with two tuners on each side rather than four on one. That saves a lot of wood on the headstock and hopefully reduces neck dive. I need to make a customwood pattern for the headstock so I can tidy it up with the router next. Then it is time to put the fingerboard on.

A little more progress to report

Headstock shaped and guide holes drilled for the tuning machines

Grove cut in the base of the fingerboard to access the truss rod head

Waiting for a nut and nut seating file to arrive. I need to get the nut position sorted and then the fingerboard can be glued on.

Apologies for all the pictures, but lots of progress yesterday

Edges of the slot for the nut are cut. I put some lemon oil on the offcut of the fingerboard to see what the finished wood would look like. Pretty happy with the look
IMG_3785.JPG
Time to set in the truss rod. A blob of silicon sealer at the head, middle and tail hold it in place and stop any rattling
IMG_3789.JPG
So the truss rod is in for good now!
IMG_3790.JPG
Marked out the shape of the neck onto the back of the fingerboard. The masking tape makes it easier to see the pencil line when bandsawing
IMG_3788.JPG
Finally I get to glue and clamp something! :D Fingerboard is sawn roughly to shape and every available clamp utilised to hold it in the right spot.

Really starting to feel there is a bass neck emerging from the timber now. Here I've routed the headstock down to thickness and done a nice transition for the fingerboard. Needs to be sanded flat to get rid of the router marks, but starting to get a few things like they will be when they are finished.

Haven't had time to work on this much lately, but the tuner holes have been drilled and tuners fitted for the first time. Nut slot filed out and the nut is just sitting in the slot in this photo.
