Any recommendations for Electronic repairs/modifications?

Post by bronzet » Wed Sep 03, 2014 6:30 pm

Hey there forum members, i am trying to find a great musical equipment electrician in the Auckland area (CBD or East Auckland areas preferred). I am importing a Rane DC 24 compressor unit from the USA and will need to get it modified to work on NZ power as it is currently setup to work on the lower American 110 voltage.
Thanks all

Actually, you don't need to do any mods to the unit itself. Rane equipment from that time period used an external transformer that provided 18 Volts AC, Center-tapped to give two 9 volt AC supplies.

So, all you need to do is find a transformer that has two outputs that provide 9 to 15
volts each. The power connector is a standard RJ-11 telephone jack (what everyone except NZ uses).

Here's a link to the data sheet on the power supply:
http://www.rane.com/pdf/rs1dat.pdf

Looking at the schematic for the unit itself, they just run it through a voltage doubler circuit and into 7815/7915 regulators to provide +/- 15V DC. So, you could just get couple of 24VDC supplies and use them, since they would just go straight through the diodes and not double the input.

All that may sound a bit overwhelming, but to any electronics guy it'll make sense.

I'm in the midst of unpacking all of my stuff so I haven't gotten around to finding a transformer yet...

Thanks for the advice. I will look into finding the right transformer to get modified to work with the compressor. If anybody has experience with doing this mod with their Rane compressor or similar, please drop me/us a line and tell us about it.
Thanks
