BOSS SYNTH PEDAL - suggested settings/uses?

Hey Bassheads,
I just scored a Boss Synth-bass pedal and although it has some exciting sounds within, it seems like a strange one to find some good settings with. Any tips?
Also, sometimes the sound 'engages' and sometimes not (depending on how hard you play note etc) - whats the deal with that? Tracking? Sometimes the effect sounds out for a certain length of time/sustain and then just stops?

Hey Def. I know eactly what you mean. I have a synth setting on my amp which does the same thing. The 'engaging' has to do with the waveform you've got selected (well, that's the issue with my amp and I assume it is the same thing for you). If it is in a trough when you play a note, you don't get much, but if you play on a peak you get the full noise. I don't know what options for settings you have on your pedal, but I could email you some 'factory settings' that I got with amp so you may be able to find something you like. PM me your email address and I'll flick it through

B

envelope filter's have a "threshold" or "limit" that responds to the attack sent.
so depending on the setting your pluck may create more or less of an audible effect

I'm not familiar with the unit you have sorry. But i suspect only part of this pedal is a filter...
I will find a print review and quote from there in a forlorn effort to appear knowledgeable if you like :D

I used to have one of those...What a nightmare .
Yeah the tracking is not so good, but it tightens up your playing .
I had major level setting problems with mine. . I would get it going sweet with my amp between clean an effect, then when playing through a PA with subs the synth would be too loud . So the sound man would turn the bass down then when I would go clean the bass would drop out of the mix...the whole thing was a pain in the ass .
Maybe I should have mixed more clean signal with it

ah sweet im getting the hang of it now - it basically takes 3 really important things:

1. a careful blend of dry to effected signal (more dry than effect)
2. tight, single note playing (not too busy)
3. a riff/ song/ groove that suits it!

:D

Do you think you'll get much use out of it?

Yip for sure ! Maybe not alot of use but in the tracks I intend to use it, it will be crucial! (I make hip hop style beats as well as in band so it'll come in handy for sure)
