only if you set it to "Kill".

a good transparent compressor will even out string balance and provide a little more sustain, but keep your dynamics largely intact - it's all about subtlety.
a good limiter will keep all dynamics while pulling back those accidental dig-ins.

but there are times where either maximum sustain, or maximum squash are required...in both cases dynamics will be almost out-the-window, even moreso if you cannot control the attack of the compressor.

for a great example of squashed bass tone that works brilliantly, check out "Smoke" by Dimmer.
i like rickenbackers. and fridges.

Interesting. Thanks.

I guess a part of this question of effector users would also involve the genre of music being played?
For the stuff I love to play, anything other than bass/lead/amp is not required.

i think both genre of music and how/where you want your bass to sit in the mix.

mine sits fairly proudly, so i tend to utilise effects to emphasise that. different distortions depending on the song, phaser and delay where we need to pull things back and add some ambience. sometimes all at once, but rarely.

My situation exactly. Plus I love the sound of clean, smooth bass, and the challenge of producing it with no external help. For me, Leland (Lee) Sklar is the man, and I'm very happy if I can sound, and play, like him.

Haven't plugged straight into an amp in years because I always have a tuner, which doesn't count as an effect but anyway.... At points I have had a pretty full on board with various overdrive and fuzz sounds, loops with gating, octave and distortion, delay and verb ect... For the music we were making I needed lots of weird synthy sounds. Currently just using a light overdrive, although sometimes I use the gain on my Orange instead.

20 pedals or none, who cares as long as it works for what you do. That said, most people with big boards overuse them....

My tuner plugs into the tuner port on my amp on its own little lead.

I use effects, but only sparingly.

This is not of course because I'm "tasteful".
More just that I'm a bit lazy and haven't really spent much time experimenting or thinking through where in the set more effects could be used.

Mainly I'm using a delay on a couple of songs, and some wah here and there on a few songs.

Love me some bass wah. Oh yes.
