Bass effectors useage?

Post by Jazzbass » Wed Dec 08, 2010 7:01 am

In a recent conversation, I was asked how many bassists use effects on a regular basis. Obviously, I couldn't answer that, 'cos I only have a few bottom liners around where I live and that's a very skewed sample, 'cos we're all old farts.

So here's a wee poll to inform me with what's happening more widely in NZ among the bass fraternity.

You can tick 4 boxes.

I thank you in advance for bringing an old geezer more up-to-date. :D

Not often, if I do its usually in the studio as well. Probably the only thing I use (very occasionally) live is the big muff, depending if its needed for who I'm playing with!

I have a gt 10b I get all kinds of crazy stuff (like dub step sounds etc) out of, but in most realistic playing situations it's basically my DI, wah and distortion pedal (and used in studio so I didnt have to bring an amp)

i also find theres no shortage of ways to get interesting sounds from your bass without effects either

The only bass effect I've ever heard that I liked was Pino Palladino on the Paul Young records. Other than that, forget it.
Rather strange when you think that I'm the NZ MXR distributor, so I get to play with all the MXR bass pedals.

Love my Crybaby Bass Wah, Boss Flanger and Boss Synth pedal - I have more but if I had to go down to 3 it would be those!

Love my Boss bass chorus, and playing around with my overdrive too. :D Haven't tried bass wah, but have used my crybaby from my guitar days with my bass..... Have a limiter on order and I'm keen to have one. Those I've talked to love using them and seem to leave them on constant. I was surprised the difference that was made when I finally got the wallet out and got a 9v adapter and daisy chain for my pedals - was able to turn the level down a bit on them to get the same pitch in volume, and seemed to increase the depth too - Maybe I'd had a few beers though.......?

my current goodie board in all it's out-of-focus glory:

the Nobels compressor really does sound kinda horrible - kills all the rawk that makes my tone what it is, but works OK for one song where i need to sustain the balls out of one part.

yeah, the Artec is good...sometimes throws a pulse though when bypassed (needs a kick and it's happy). it's a bit weak, but so far i've found any stronger delays overpower things.

the black thing is the "dookin-yasseah!", a modified old Rat 2 with variable high and low feedback loops (high has a 3-way midrange selector). right rootswitch is that of the Rat ("dookin"), also brings the low control in. left footswitch engages the high control ("yasseah!").

cap upgrades to the original circuit to grab more low-end.

plus, for the noise-meister in me, a switch on the back which pulls the ground from the input, and causes the pedal to self-oscillate when the gain is cranked. then, the adjustable high and low control the pitch of the oscillation...sounds wicked thru an octave pedal. calibrate it thru a tuner and mark appropriately, and you can play it as a mono synth of sorts.

I like the plain old simple Boss pedals,I have 3 already, Octave,Distortion and Chorus, and use the Chorus for certain tunes every gig.
Next additions will be Limiter/Compressor and Flanger.
Effects are cool fun, especially when just jamming as they always tend to bring out ideas I would never have thought of with a clean sound.

I only use a compressor, but I use it religiously. I like to keep the volume fairly constant regardless of whether I'm picking, fingering (snigger) or slapping. I don't really consider it an effect though, it's just controlling the volume, not the tone. I've occasionally kicked in the overdrive channel on my amp for a bit of dirty bass fun, but never used it at a gig.

I've never used a compressor other than one built into an amp and that did damn near nothing to my ears. I'm very much a dynamics player - I love to be able to get loud or soft through different passages or songs. Does a compressor inhibit this?
