Preamps - MXR vs SADOWSKY

Post by definite » Mon Apr 14, 2008 7:37 am

Whats your verdict (if any) on the comparison between the MXR bass pre-amp and the Sadowsky?

The MXR also has an overdrive + 3 band Eq (compared to sadowsky 2 band + no overdrive) but im after TONE not features! Unless of course the MXR also has awesome tone then the features are a good bonus! BUT the Sadowsky gets mad rave reviews...

I've used the Sadowsky pre-amp for 10 years and it's a beautiful thing.
It is simple to use, long battery life, and seems to be tweaked just right for a Fender Jazz Bass.

I haven't tried the Sadowsky, but I can almost bet that it is a much more natural sounding preamp than the MXR. Of course, that doesn't make the Sadowsky "better", its a question if you want character and if you like the character of the MXR.

I don't remember too much about the MXR since it was a few years ago that I tried one, but I remember the distortion being VERY harsh, but it seems thats not what you want it for anyway...

Aguilar make a similar one to the Sadowsky, and EBS make a similar (but probably more hifi) unit to the MXR. Or if you like boomy undefined midscooped mush that doesn't cut through the mix, check out a Sansamp 8)

i've been tempted to try out that sadowsky over there. mainly cause i usually play straight into a DI to foh.
but i currently use the mxr, and gonna be a/b ing it to a sansamp soon enough. does anyone actually retail sadowsky in nz?
i'll be so keen to even try out one in a showroom if possible

what part of the country you in?
as for retail, no one picks up Sadowsky here.
so if your Chch give me a yell if you want to try the original pre-amp out (no DI)

im in auckland! gosh, opposite ends =p
i would try to get one with the DI out. as i dont have a rig yet, sometimes its just more convinient to get a tone im familiar and comfortable with with a DI out. when im at the desk i always mix the two signals anyway

Bought a Sadowsky
Tried all sorts of bass/amp/sadowsky settings
Has done nothing for my tone...(if anything made it worse!)

Pretty underwhelmed right now (and pissed at myself for spending so much for so little! )

Bought it brand new but not from a store - no-one carries sadowsky here in nz - the person i bought it from imported it.

I wanted a nice preamp, DI, tuner output and mute switch all in one!

i use a sadowsky and at first i thought there was not that much difference.
but when i used it with the band, the sadowsky EQ will let ur sound sit well and cut thru the mix!!
i highly recommend trying the pedal with a band first before disliking it.
the frequencies on it are set at the sweet spots for optimum sound in the mix.
i will never play without this pedal :)

however, i am curious about the sansamp bass driver compared to this.
